PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's basketball senior
Ron Harper Jr. was named an All-American, as the Associated Press announced its All-America team on Tuesday afternoon. Harper Jr. was an Honorable Mention selection.
Harper Jr. is the 11
th Scarlet Knight in program history to earn All-America honors. He is the first Rutgers player named All-American since Quincy Douby in 2006.
Harper Jr. is leading the team at 15.6 points per game this season. The Franklin Lakes, N.J. native is shooting 43.4 percent from the field and a career-best 39.0 percent from three-point distance this season, along with 5.9 rebounds per game, a career-best 33 steals and 19 blocks.
Harper Jr. had career-highs of 31 points and six three pointers made in the win over Maryland on Jan. 15. He had 29 points in the victory over Nebraska and shot a perfect 10-10 at the free-throw line on Jan. 8. Harper Jr. led the way with 30 points and made a memorable buzzer-beating three-pointer to defeat No. 1 Purdue on Dec. 9.
The Scarlet Knights are 7-0 when Harper Jr. scores 20+ points in a game in 2021-22. The forward started the 2021-22 season with four consecutive double-doubles,
In four seasons at Rutgers, has played in 120 games with 107 starts, scoring 1,503 points and collecting 718 rebounds, 94 steals and 77 blocks. He enters the NCAA Tournament 13
th in RU history in points and 19
th in blocks for his career.
Harper Jr. has received a host of accolades this season, placing him among the nation's best players. He is currently one of the top five players for the Julius Erving Award, given to the nation's top small forward. He was also on the preseason Watch List for the Wooden Award, one of 50 players listed for the nation's top player. Harper Jr. is a two-time All-Metropolitan Player of the Week following his performances vs. Purdue, Michigan, and Nebraska.
Harper Jr. was also honored on the USBWA's All-America All District team voted on by the writers and the NWABC's All-America 2nd All-District team voted on by the coaches.
