October Cool

October brings cooler temperatures, colorful leaves, and the second issue of Impact, the newsletter of the Health Sciences Libraries. This month we highlight Embase, a rich database of biomedical and pharmacological information available to researchers, clinicians, faculty, and students alike. Also, we mark the retirement of Associate University Librarian Judy Cohn.

Embase: New Database Enhances Research and Discovery

Embase is here!

Embase is a global biomedical and pharmacological research database. It assists students, faculty, researchers, and practitioners in conducting systematic reviews, researching pharmacology, monitoring drug safety, assessing medical device compliance, and more. Embase combines the complete indexing of MEDLINE with indexing for over 2,900 additional journals. In total, Embase includes indexing for articles in over 8,000 currently published journals from over 90 countries. It also includes abstracts from over 11,000 conferences.

Embase’s indexing uses the Emtree thesaurus, a controlled vocabulary for biomedicine and the related life sciences. Emtree includes all of MeSH as well as many more terms and natural language synonyms.

Learn About the New NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy

NIH’s new Data Management & Sharing (DMS) Policy takes effect on January 25, 2023. On Wednesday, November 2, from noon until 1:00 p.m., a joint presentation by Research and Sponsored Programs and Rutgers University Libraries will summarize the new policy and discuss resources to help faculty comply!

NIH requires researchers to prospectively plan for how scientific data will be preserved and shared. Investigators are required to:

  • Submit a Data Management and Sharing plan outlining how scientific data and accompanying metadata will be managed and shared, including potential restrictions or limitations.
  • Comply with the Data Management and Sharing plan approved by the funding Institute or Center (IC)
