Marvelous May

May brings a flurry of flowers, a proliferation of pollen, and an excellent edition of Impact! We want to share news of a new workshop, a new librarian collaboration, and a new employee. And because it's May, let’s celebrate graduation!

Data Comes to Life in New Workshop

Is something missing from your poster or presentation? Does it seem plain? Could it use some color? Does it really show what you want to show?

Data visualization represents data through graphs or images. When used effectively, it can enhance understanding of your information and may reveal patterns or trends in your raw data.

On Tuesday, June 27, from 10:00–11:00 a.m., Information and Education Librarian Matthew Bridgeman will lead a workshop titled "Navigating the 4 C's of Data Visualization." This workshop will address best practices in data visualization ranging from graph selection to the impact of color on the meaning of data. The Zoom session will be recorded and shared with all registrants.

Health Sciences Librarian Assists in Veterans Burn Pit Research

Research Services Librarian Yingting Zhang is a member of a research team working on a nationwide evidence synthesis project investigating the health effects of burn pits, where waste is disposed of by burning, on exposed veterans. The project is funded through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs which seeks to improve health care access and funding for veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances. President Biden's late son Beau Biden was among those exposed veterans.

On May 23, Rutgers University Libraries hosted its annual State of the Libraries meeting. Staff and librarians from all Rutgers campuses gathered to share and celebrate the past year's achievements. We presented four posters at this event:

  • Principal Management Assistant Corisa Mobley-Victory co-presented "Accomplishments of the Rutgers University Libraries DEI Committee."

  • Special Collections Librarian Bob Vietrogoski co-presented "Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Promotes Newark Medical History."

  • Interim Assistant University Librarian for the Health Sciences Victoria Wagner (pictured above with Science Research Librarian Mei Ling Lo) co-presented "RUL Faculty Fellows at the 2023 Rutgers Leadership Academy."

  • Research Services Librarian Yingting Zhang co-presented "Breaking Down Barriers to Publishing and Reading: Librarians Engage with Open Access."

Smith Library Welcomes New Head of Access Services

George F. Smith Library of the Health Sciences welcomes Richard Jutkiewicz as its new Head of Access Services. Rich comes to Rutgers University Libraries from Manor College in Pennsylvania, where he was head librarian and assistant professor. Rich oversees the circulation, interlibrary loan, media, and technology services at Smith Library. Please join us in welcoming him to our team!

Celebrating RWJMS Graduation

On May 15, Library Specialist Philip Wilson (who was honored at State of the Libraries for his 30 years of service!) was invited to the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School graduation. Phil reports that "It was great being invited and witnessing our current and former work study students get hooded as medical doctors. I was overjoyed, and it showed, to the point where the parent sitting next to me asked, 'Which one is yours?' to which I responded, 'All of them!' The connection we make with our students goes far beyond the work they do for us—they become family, and we wish them the best in their future!”
