Groundhogs, the Big Football Game, valentines, and even an extra day this year - February has it all! And this issue of IMPACT has news about an exciting new open access partnership with Elsevier, librarian reference data and services, a Smith Library construction update, a welcome to a new Rutgers Libraries administrator, and this month’s Health Sciences Libraries stressbusters!
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has just announced a historic, transformative open access partnership with leading publisher Elsevier. The five-year arrangement managed by the Rutgers University Libraries (RUL) will provide the Rutgers community with read access to over 4,600 journals, 1,400 of which are fully open access.
In addition, Rutgers researchers will be able to publish open access articles without incurring Article Processing Charges (APCs) in any of Elsevier’s 1,700 hybrid journals (those with both open access and subscription content). View details of the agreement between Rutgers University and Elsevier here. The anticipated overall APC savings is expected to exceed $7 million!
Rutgers health sciences librarians are here for you - and we can prove it!

Good news: long-awaited restroom renovations at George F. Smith Library have been completed! We appreciated everyone's patience during the two weeks of construction. We will keep you posted on all Smith Library facilities improvements. Next up: interior and exterior lifts!
Smith Library Welcomes Caroline Muglia
On February 14, George F. Smith Library welcomed Caroline Muglia during her first visit to the Rutgers Health - Newark campus. Muglia joined Rutgers University Libraries in January as the inaugural Associate Vice President for Campus Libraries. In this new role, she will provide leadership and direction for the system-wide libraries located on the Camden, New Brunswick, and Newark campuses. During her visit, Muglia toured Smith Library and visited with librarians and staff to learn more about our resources, services, and expertise. We look forward to hosting her at the Robert Wood Johnson Library soon!
Health Science Libraries Stressbusting
We know how intense this time of year can be, especially for second year medical students studying for the STEP 1 exam. Both Health Sciences Libraries hosted coffee and hot chocolate snack breaks on February 14. As seen above, students enjoyed making their own stress balls at Smith Library and buttons at Robert Wood Johnson Library.
