Good eReads for the Holidays (or Anytime!)

Looking for some free e-reading over the holiday break?

ProQuest Ebook Central contains over 200,000 ebooks from major university presses and other scholarly publishers across a wide range of academic disciplines. Books can be read online, and most can also be checked out and downloaded for offline reading. Checking out and downloading a full book typically requires creating a ProQuest account and installing Adobe Digital Editions.

Here are some recent titles:

The World of Sugar: How the Sweet Stuff Transformed Our Politics, Health, and Environment Over 2,000 Years (Harvard University Press, 2023)

“The definitive 2,500-year history of sugar and its human costs, from its little-known origins as a luxury good in Asia to worldwide environmental devastation and the obesity pandemic. Sugar transformed life on every continent, creating and destroying whole cultures through industrialization, labor migration, and changes in diet. Sugar made fortunes, corrupted governments, and shaped the policies of technocrats. And it provoked freedom cries that rang with world-changing consequences.”

Graphic Public Health: A Comics Anthology and Road Map (Pennsylvania State University Press, 2022)

“Graphic Public Health demonstrates the range and potential of comics to address topics such as immunization promotion, outbreak prevention, gun violence, opioid addiction prevention, and climate change. More than a collection of cartoons, this book connects comics with fundamentals of health communication. Practical and purposeful, Graphic Public Health is . . .  an invaluable resource for public health professionals and advocates, scholars of comics and graphic studies, and fans of the graphic medicine genre.”

New Jersey Fan Club: Artists and Writers Celebrate the Garden State (Rutgers University Press, 2022)

“ . . . an eclectic anthology featuring personal essays, interviews, and comics from a broad group of established and emerging writers and artists who have something to say about New Jersey. It offers a multifaceted look at the state's history and significance, told through narrative nonfiction, photographs, and illustrations.”

Treasures from the Class of 1902

Pictured above are a Newark City Hospital School of Nursing (NCHSN) Class of 1902 photograph, and a portrait of graduating nurse Alice Barnard Gilbert. These items (along with Gilbert's diploma, graduation pin, and additional documents) have just been generously donated to Smith Library's Special Collections in the History of Medicine by Joanne Ackley, Gilbert's granddaughter. These are by far the earliest NCHSN student-related records held by Special Collections. While its School of Nursing closed in 1971, Newark City Hospital is the founding institution that evolved into today's University Hospital.
