Rutgers University plans to adopt flexible work arrangements for employees, it announced Thursday. President Jonathan Holloway said in a statement that “Managing the university throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us to be more flexible, resourceful and resilient while staying focused on what matters most to our students, faculty, staff and the communities we serve.” The new Rutgers Future of Work initiative is based on recommendations from the university’s Future of Work Task Force, which sought input from employees and students via surveys and listening sessions over the last year.
Short-term recommendations include allowing eligible employees to work on campus at least three days a week starting Sept. 1. For those who can’t work remotely, another short-term recommendation involves exploring emergency caregiver support programs and more flexible work schedules. Regarding faculty members, in particular, Holloway said, “It is my unambiguous expectation that faculty teach, train, advise and mentor in person.”
Rutgers has a separate but now related goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Planning for adopting the task force’s longer-term recommendations—such as reimagining teaching approaches to enhance student engagement and learning—begins in the fall.
