Faces & Voices of Rutgers: Christopher Markus

Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and producer Christopher “Chris” Markus is best known as the co-writer of five films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the high-grossing blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

The alumnus’s latest film, produced with screenwriting partner Stephen McFeely, The Electric State, will be released by Netflix on March 14, 2025, and stars Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Key Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, and many others.

The Buffalo native came to Rutgers with “vague aspirations” to be a writer and “took every creative writing course that Rutgers had” while recognizing “a lot of encouraging people who did not tell me to stop.”

President Jonathan Holloway welcomed the 1991 graduate of Rutgers College back to campus on November 23, 2023, to discuss his career journey and the role Rutgers played. When reflecting upon his experience, Markus credited “the whole thing” for contributing most to his personal development as an undergraduate English major.

“I took some fantastic classes,” said Markus. “I would also say not to just take classes in your major because I took some great things that really changed the way I think that didn’t have anything to do with it.”
