LYON, FRANCE – Former Scarlet Knight and Rutgers Athletics Hall of Famer
Carli Lloyd became a back-to-back FIFA World Cup Champion with
the U.S. Women's National Team on Sunday afternoon in France. Team USA defeated the Netherlands, 2-0, to collect its record fourth World Cup title with the victory.
Competing in her fourth World Cup, Lloyd saw action in all seven matches, scoring three goals for the U.S. With two goals versus Chile on June 16, the Delran, New Jersey, native set a record with a goal in six consecutive World Cup games. Additionally, Lloyd's goals helped Team USA registered the record for the most goals scored by a team in a single FIFA Women's World Cup with 26.
Lloyd also helped Team USA to its third World Cup title in 2015, where the midfielder recorded a hat-trick in the 5-2 win over Japan in the final. She earned the Golden Ball and Silver Boot after her historic performance.
KNIGHTS AT THE WORLD CUP
Overall, three Scarlet Knights were in action at this year's World Cup, including Jamaica's
Chantelle Swaby and Canada's Shannon Woeller.
Swaby started all three games and played 225 minutes in the group phase for the historic Jamaica roster, having earned its first-ever bid to the tournament and becoming the first Caribbean nation to qualify. Swaby and the Reggae Girlz progressed through the Caribbean zone of the qualifying to reach the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Championship. At the Championship, the squad secured a third-place finish and a spot at France 2019 with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Panama.
Woeller rounded out the Rutgers women's soccer players at the 2019 World Cup, representing the Canadian Women's National Team.
